Last week we told you that the top five cities for meeting men over 35 were spread throughout the country (#1: San Jose, #2: Salt Lake City, #3: Raleigh). Now the New York Daily News suggests that landing a man on the Eastern seaboard isn’t as tough as all that. In fact, New York has been ranked the #2 state to land a single guy, edged out only by Washington, DC. (Hey wait! That’s not technically a STATE! No fair!) According to the News, “there are currently 3.9 million men in New York City, and 35% of them are single.” Too bad there’s also 4.3 million women also living in the city, with nearly 70% of them being unmarried. (So, um, why isn’t the article — or, like, any article ever — about the best region for meeting single WOMEN, hrmm?). Apparently, though, a little move upstate will do some additional good to your odds: in Albany, 75% of men — and 75% of women — are single. (Now does someone want to do a study on why political cities are such singlesfests?)

Meanwhile, over at CNNMoney.com: Hoboken, NJ shows the most single people with 57.7%, followed by Cambridge, MA; Somerville, MA; Berkeley, CA; and Boston, MA (hello, college town). Albany appears at #15; New York City doesn’t show up at all.

Man. If only there were some sort of map. Oh, wait.

“Statistics are wonderful. I can make them say anything I want.” - Karl R

Let’s look at this information critically. I’m not interested in every single woman. I’m not interested in every single woman over the age of 35. I’m not interested in every single woman between the ages of 20 and 64.

Some of these studies are counting singles over the age of 65. In that population, women outnumber the men. If you’re in an area where the population is older (i.e. Florida), that will bias the results.

Immigrant populations have more men then women. If you live in an area with a substantial immigrant population (i.e. states bordering Mexico), that will bias the results.

1 out of every 9 black men is in prison. If you live in a city with a large, low-income, black population, that will bias the results.

But all of these factors are irrelevant to me. I’m looking for an educated, middle-income person within 10 years of my age. In order for the study to be at all relevant, it would have to compare single men and women in that demographic. I’d hazard a guess that those numbers are close to even in every major city (even NYC).

  2. Karl if you live in or close too NY you need to get a hold of me I may have someone who falls into that category. She is a teacher, loves art, wants to travel, great cook, likes to work out. Good heart loves passionately but is straightforward and if you don’t want to know don’t ask. Also she doesn’t want children which if I remember you don’t either. auburn41201@yahoo.com

  3. I live about 20 mins from Albany, and I’m sorry, but those statistics are way false when it comes to looking for single, white, middle-income, educated, moderately attractive men with all their white teeth and not enough back hair to knit a scarf with, even in my age range of 28-36.

Taking “single” as the only factor, maybe. But there are plenty of REASONS why most of those so-called 75% are single that will forever keep them that way, much of it relates to appearance and how they take care of themselves, but a lot is also related to intelligence level and lack-of-slimebag/whorebag quotient.

  4. Terminally Single,

I have met hundreds of unattractive, overweight, stupid, hairy, uneducated, obnoxious, sloppy and smelly married people. They may be married to someone who is equally unappealing, but they ARE married.

Other women aren’t necessarily looking for the same men you are. Some women are even trying to avoid the men you would find most desirable.

    Tonya,

I don’t live anywhere near New York.

  6. Karl, you’re absolutely right. So how do they make something like this statistical info work? Like you said, “In order for the study to be at all relevant, it would have to compare single men and women in that demographic,” but I’d like to add to that, “it would have to compare single women in YOUR chosen demographic who are looking for single men in the demographics which YOU reside.”

Then is when the numbers get really, really small. :)

  7. And I meant that for everyone, Karl… sorry, that looked wrong after I submitted it. LOL

What I was getting at was that out of the men I’m looking for, it’s first, hard to find them, and then to find one who’s looking for me, well… you know.

I’m not that picky, either. I’m far more picky on personality and morals and life skills than I am on looks or money or anything superficial.
