Anakin seeks Padme

Filed under: Advice, TV — posted by Mia @ 11:16 am

Gawker’s SciFi blog i09 flirts with the eternal question — also explored on How I Met Your Mother — “Sure they love me, but can they love my Star Wars?

It’s all fun and games until the Firefly box is opened, and all of a sudden you’re caught defending space pirates. How I Met Your Mother’s season premiere perfectly covered this silly question that those of us with short fuses and huge science fiction collections often find ourselves in….It’s a sweet look at the geeking out we all do when our most favorite movie is on and you really, really hope that your friend/buddy/significant other/or homeless guy on the street will enjoy it as much as you will. The nice thing about HIMYM’s take on the “deal breaker” movie is that at least Sarah Chalke was smart enough to lie. Which is my advice to those of you just getting into the scifi game.

Just this week a beautiful girl approached me and asked what she should do as she “discovered” her fiances’ in-depth collection of Star Trek episodes. I told her to ask him to play her his favorite episodes that he thought she would like, open a bottle of wine (or two), and if she didn’t like it just let him know he can have all the fun friend time he wants with his buddies that want to come over for Trek marathons.

I’m not saying all relationships lacking a mutual love of sci fi are totally lost to the dark side, but if your love interest isn’t willing to at least sample your geeky taste along with a bottle of wine, maybe they are not the droid you’re looking for?

(Bonus: io9 also asks this excellent question: “My favorite can-not-live-with-out-deal-breaker-if-they-don’t-at-least-pretend-to-like-it movie is and probably always will be Aliens. What’s yours?”)

  1. I always try to break the news gently.
    “I like to read Sci-Fi.”
“I play games on my computer.”

After they absorb that news (and discover that I can carry on conversations without geeking out) then they’re ready to discover that I have a bookshelf of sci-fi and fantasy novels and that I play tabletop role-playing games.

It’s nice if a girlfriend shares my interests … but (at a minimum) she needs to be able to tolerate mine.

  2. ah.the age old question. a geek or not a geek?
Im already engaged to a geek and im a bit of a geek myself, problem solved!

however, if I was a non geek and a geek was checking me out I wouldnt mind looking. I’ve found that geeky guys are the best! They are stellar in character and fun to be with! Vs. Mr. hot guy who all the girls LOVE! (pass!)

On my onine dating profiles I always made it a point to say:
I like video games. They rock!
    I like playing PC games.
    I love anime.
I do like the good bit of sci-fi (non trekkie)

For awhile there I was getting crap shoot, even though I was aiming for a particular fella.

its all about respecting other’s space and interests. I thought I would marrya guy who likes the same music I do. For example, my fiance LOVES the 80’s. I can’t stand them. Just things like that. The differences balance out the sameness.

On a side note, I prefer my Indiana Jones vs. Star wars. (even though I own star wars I-III and lego indiana jones for the ps2)

  3. i love firefly, H2G2, Dr. Who, and have seen every star trek episode and or movie ever made. this halloween i plan to be kaylee of firefly fame. i have read lord of the rings and the silmarillion. when i was a kid i was really into star wars. i can code in html, basic, or python and want to learn more. i play chess online. i play zork. i’m into webcomics. anime never appealed to me. i watch old scifi movies regularly and am addicted to old horror.

all my friends and boyfriends have been geeks.
i’m not unattractive or unpopular and i have a thing for nerdy boys. my boyfriend now got me into lord of the rings in a big way, and i introduced him to firefly and star trek. we work.

  5. My alltime “love filtering” movie was Dune… Granted the movie does not do a great service to the series of books, but If any date was willing to go through aprox 3 hours of giant sandworms and ehtereal monologue hey… she was definitely worth the indulgence.

  6. The second thing to choose if where the wine is
produced. Well we have taken the time to create an informative website which will help take the guesswork out of choosing your stemless wine
glass set, so click on over and check it out. Free standing fridges
can be easily positioned in any available space or used to proudly display
your wine in the middle of your lounge or restaurant.
