Question 3: Can You Trade the Scene for the Scenery?

Do you frequent the same bars and clubs so often even the bathroom attendants know you by name? Sure these places have the best DJ in town and the coldest beer on tap, but they also have other loyal patrons who are as regular as your Grandma on Metamucil.

Shake things up a bit. If clubbing is your thing, leave the fishnets and fedoras at home and put yourself in someone else's shoes - literally. Bowling is suddenly cool again. And if you must have live music, head over to Bowlmor Lanes for nighttime Day-Glo bowling complete with a DJ or Stonehenge in Akron, Ohio for black-light lunar bowling.

More of a pubber than a clubber? Try a different kind of stimulant: coffee. Coffeehouses haven't yet lost their edge. And in fact, many of them are now catering toward singles. Drip in NYC offers dozens of binders chock full of profiles on other sippers in the area and will arrange dates on site for interested parties. Judging from their track record, there's a lot of partying going on. So next time you say, "make mine a double," it better be an espresso.

And now for something completely different. Pottery. That's right, many cities offer shops where you can mold, paint and fire your own plates, mugs and bowls, some while munching on popcorn and watching movies. Our Name is Mud in NYC, Atlas Clayworks in Northern California and Color Me Mine in Baltimore all offer classes and studio space for those of us who fantasize about recreating that famous scene in "Ghost." And the small, intimate classes are perfect for leaning over to your neighbor and asking to use their glaze.

Question 4: What Are You Wearing?

There's nothing like a new look to change your attitude and outlook and of course attract compliments and attention. You could cut or color your hair or buy some new clothes -- yawn. Or you could be bold, daring and adventurous. Really cut or color your hair. Go from brunette to blond bombshell or cranberry chanteuse. Cut your curls a la Felicity or get shorn like Sharon Stone. Men, how about a sexy goatee or longer sideburns (they sort of worked for Luke Perry). Try something completely different; it will always grow back and you can always adjust the color.

Rather than get a tattoo that you may live to regret, try a Swarovski crystal tattoo, all the rage in Hollywood. It looks sexy and comes off with the ease of a non-stick pan. While doing something for you, why not do something for someone else? Leaf through that closet of suits-I-haven't-worn-since-my-first-interview-for-a-Mcjob, and donate to Dress for Success, an organization that gives suits to low-income women in order to help them get into the workforce. Afterwards, why not head out to Brown Elephant Resale Store in Chicago or Keezer's in Cambridge and invest in a funky second-hand jacket that really makes you stand out in a crowd?

Question 5: Are You Wallowing?

Still get weepy when you walk past the diner you and your ex used to call your own? Mist with memories of that first salad with dressing on the side and hot fudge sundae for dessert? Time to make the move to a new locale.

You'll always have Paris but you still need to eat. Try picking a new haunt, preferably on the opposite side of town from the "other" one. There are hundreds, even thousands of eateries out there just waiting for you to walk through that door. Turn up the heat at Fahrenheit in Chicago, where your Gucci goes great with the goat cheese. Caffe Adulis treats New Yorkers [and New Haven, CT-ites as well! -Ed.] to Eritrean cuisine. Don't know what that is? It won't matter once you sample the stews and sweets. Look at that; you've gone a whole minute without thinking of your ex. Good job.

An A for Effort!

How'd you do? Are you going to put the career path on simmer, party with a new crowd, try a new hang-out, make yourself over, and make your ex a memory? Then you're ready for anything... even anyone. So get out there and spread the word! You're ready!
