Dear Breakup Girl,

I work at this coffee house in my little town and one day this boy from junior high (I'm 22 now) came in and ordered some coffee and we chatted while I was doing the steaming of the milk etc...and he turned out to be pretty babelicious. So, he's come in about 3 times in the past week and we talk a little and its cool and now I'm kinda like "hmmmm..." And I totally have this crush, because c'mon, crushes are a blast. Plus he makes me sweat, seriously: whenever he comes in I get all hot and flushed when I talk to him. OK, so my question is, in a typical customer/cashier relationship who does the asking out? Like would that be weird if I gave himhis latte and said "on the house provided you go on a date with me." Or do I go, "Hey what are you doing later on? Maybe we can hang out or something and get some...uh...coffee." I mean I've pretty much decided I've got the cajones to pursue him; it's just a matter of etiquette. Thanks, Breakup Girl!

-- Befuddled Barista

Dear Barista,

"Get some ... uh ... coffee." I love it. No such thing as a "typical" customer / cashier relationship; whatever you do, don't take your cues from the movie "Go." Instead, indeed, lay this line on your Joe and steam on.

Love,
Breakup Girl

PS Perhaps-paranoid disclaimer: if this biscottino is still in junior high, serve him up his Ovaltine and switch to decaf.
