Dear Breakup Girl,
What if I broke up with my fiance a week before the wedding and since then,
he's acted horribly and tried to hurt me in every way--almost ruining my career
and erasing all of my graduate work by deleting all of my computer files? I
know I hurt him, but don't I have a right to be angry as well? He wants to
talk, but I am happy now and I don't see the point of talking to him because I
feel like I'll just make him sadder. What do I do?
-- SM
Dear SM,
If you did what you thought was best, fine -- and
brava for a must-have-been-terrifying 11th-hour bail that just may be the envy
of the folks out there who feel stuck with people they didn't mean to marry,
but, well, the DJ had just reconfirmed...
But.What do you do? You take his call. He didn't get
to speak his vows; now let him speak his piece. Regardless of how you feel.
Your hard drive is one thing; his feelings are not so easily deleted. You owe
him at least one audience. And by the way, is your computer back to normal? It
seems to be doing funny things with pronouns. In your second to last sentence,
the second time you say "him," don't you mean
"myself?"
Love,
Breakup Girl
