Love and marriage, marriage, marriage, marriage

Filed under: News, Treats — posted by Sadie @ 9:21 am

Riddle: What’s the opposite of a breakup?

Answer: Frequently married — to each other! — porn star Annie Sprinkle and butch multi-media artist Elizabeth Stephens.

Yep, the super-committed couple is at it again — for the fourth time, and they’re counting. Yesterday marked the momentous occasion of Annie and Beth’s wedding — their fourth annual, this one with a green eco-love theme.

As part of a seven-year project of their collaboration the Love Art Lab, Sprinkles and Stevens get married once a year for seven years. Each wedding corresponds to the color and properties of one of the seven chakras.

Just a few of the reasons Annie and Beth’s relationship might inspire the pants off you:

They met when they were younger but fell in love “later in life;” they are a successful collaborative team; they turn love and sex into art; they aren’t afraid of love or commitment, or at least do a bang-up job of overcoming those fears; the hell — the first three times - with the ban on gay marriage; Annie beat breast cancer in their first year of marriage; they are openly sex-positive; they tried to have a baby but when it didn’t work opted for a black lab; they encourage others by sharing their story; they are just cute as pie.

And now that gay marriage has been legalized in California (finally!) their lastest nuptial might spread love into the world with more than costumes and performance art. After all, what says “Congratulations on your continued connubiality” more than shared health benefits and hospital visitation rights?

You know you want to see pictures from weddings one, two and three….

  1. I do not understand how a majority vote by a free democratic society can be nullified by the Judicial branch. If it is up for vote, then BY DEFINITION, it is legal to have either outcome - for or against. What is the world coming to when we are fighting for freedom and democracy and yet it is denied by politics?

On another note, my lesbian coworker and I were discussing the recent decision and I said, so are you getting married, and she rolled he eyes and responded that they FOUGHT about it all last night. Which brought up and interesting question. Now that gay marriage is legal in CA, there is no excuse not to do it, but does everyone REALLY want to get married? Let’s face it aren’t there relationships out there where one partner says to the other, “Babe, if it we legal I’d marry you in a heartbeat.” when in fact they are just fine with the status quo? Are their gay men and women out there today who are cringing at the recent ruling (like my co-worker) because they are being forced into an arrangement they don’t want?

  2. Plenty of gay and queer people don’t want to get married, in fact despise the idea of marriage; it’s roots in mysogonistic property-ownership, religious and governmental control of love and life, and the modern commercialization of marriage as a bought commitment. Plenty of straight people feel this way too. This decision is not without controversy, even within the populations it supposedly benefits. Annie and Beth knew and thought a lot about this before they decided on their project and actually invited their anti-marriage friends to come protest some of their previous weddings. However, the issue of rights is not about what people decide to do or not to do with their own lives, its about the availabilty to people to be able to make a decision instead of a default decision being forced upon them. Especially when the legal benefits and privledges of marriage are substantially different that those of non-married lovers and friends, it’s a big deal to be able to weigh those options and act based on personal need: whether it be for health insurance, citizenship, or emotional satisfaction.

  5. Todd, are you honestly questioning whether a law passed by majority vote can be nullified by the judiciary? If so, I strongly suggest you check out our constitution. It actually protects minority from the majority - through the judiciary. The majority do Not get to impose their prejudices against minorities, no matter how many of them want to. Unfortunately, the judiciary has never been quite as determined to uphold the constitution as it should, and therefore the battles of the minorities continue.
