Today’s New York Times includes a bit of a bodice-ripper about the CW’s new reality show, Farmer Wants a Wife (April 30, 9 PM EST), a sort of “The Bachelor” meets “Green Acres” featuring real-life Missouri farmer/bachelor Matt Neustadt, 30.

“When meeting women, it’s very hard to sell the fact that I am [a farmer],” Neustadt told the Times, explaining that they’re immediately suspicious of what apparently comes across as just some kind of aw-shucks line. “A lot of times they seem to think that I am a player.”

Some of this confusion may also arise from Neustadt’s physique, which the Times describes in blush-worthy detail, from his “surfer” tan to his “rippling washboard abs” to his entering the show “shirtless, his pectoral muscles rippling in the sunlight.” (Sheesh! Get a hayloft!)

But Neustadt hopes that his good looks won’t stand in the way of a true connection. And the ten women vying to be Mrs. Farmer (who “include several aspiring actors or entertainers, members of professions that might be hard to nurture in Portage Des Sioux”) say that all they’re looking for is love, too. In fact, most claim they’re more interested in finding a soul mate than being on TV. And clearly they’re willing to look outside their comfort zone. After all, according to the show’s producer, city women are simply tired of the urban singles scene.

But hey, Neustadt’s peers might say, at least urban singles have a scene.

So, reality TV junkies: you gonna watch this one? Think the down-home (versus, say, Orange County) factor will make it different from the rest?

  1. ummm…yeah. 1st thing thath comes to mind: “the farmer in the dell, farmer in the dell, hi ho the dairo the farmer in the dell.” :)

2nd thing: is this like the bachelor where they have a bunch of girls gaggling for a hot guys affections and they never exactly marry? must have been why they stopped the bacheloreette b/c the girls got married to the guy. where is the fun in that? must tease audience and then have the guy NOT marry the girl. no drama. no ratings! pfffft!

i prefer things that are funny! the only reality tv i really watch is probably beauty and the geek since that is a little more intersting. repetiive but people end up getting together and they find out a little more about each youther. and they are young…..

the show might be amusing in any case but i think im going to have to pass for better options.

  5. Well, I just happened on this show, and started watching it out of complete boredom. But after just about a half an hour I was pretty much hooked. It’s super funny and most of the girls really do seem genuine and the two that were super bad, were the first booted. It just showed that he’s smart and adorable. It kind of reminds me of that reality show “Outback Jack”, which I also loved and watched the entire season. I’ve watched a couple seasons of the “Bachelor”, but find it too dramatic and the women are just so catty. I did watch the “Bachelorette” though, which was much better. Go Tristan & Ryan!

  6. I always watched SuperNanny in this time slot, but this show got my attention during the commercials and now I watch it every week. I think it’s super funny and very interesting how the city girls are the dumb ones–like wearing high heels to drive a tractor. Come on! You know they’re not appropriate on a farm! I hope they’re sincere and respect the farmer. He’s a very nice guy.

  7. I cant believe that people actually believe that this guy is a real farmer. We never see him doing any of the traditional farm chores. He always has someone else showing the girls how to do things. No way did a single young guy decorate that so called farm house with all those beautiful things. He is a pretty boy not a farmer. I come from a town that is still 90% supported by agriculture and I have not seen any farmers that look or act like that. The ones from my home town are not hard up for a date. especially with silly nilly city girls in high heels.
